Heating Registers More Than Just Heat
Floor registers are very new in today's heating plans. Registers are pretty much a face plate that is placed over the duct in your home. The register cover will give you all the options that you are going to need to direct the air to where it needs to go. Commonly these heating registers direct the air by the use of louvers.
You typically can move the air louvers by changing the position of a little lever that comes out from the floor registers body. The designs for floor registers are pretty low profile, obviously because they are being used on a floor surface where you have to watch out and protect against burning your feet or creating a tripping hazard.
A floor register isn't just a simple floor grate that is placed on the floor. There are two main parts to any floor register and those include the grille and the damper box. The grill is to protect items from falling into the damper box as well as provide the louvers, which will distribute the warm or cool air throughout the room.
The damper box is an internal part, its pretty much a box that has special air flow properties. The damper box includes little louvers that are fixed, or reflection points to make the air flow smoothly, so you get the maximum CFM of air flow without any resistance.
In recent years it has become common for the floor register to include an in line air filter. Obviously a room air filter on the floor register is going to provide a clean environment for everyone. Commonly to change the floor filter you will need to remove the louver/grille assembly and simply snap the filter in place.

A baseboard register is pretty much a register that is cut into the corner of the wall where the junction is between the floor and the wall. The main difference is that there isn't a damper box in these. They are typically just a grille or louver setup that is placed on a hole in the baseboard or the wall.
Some of the baseboard registers have louvers that are adjustable and some do not. They are very similar to the air ducting that are often found in older homes.
Floor registers come in many shapes and sizes. Usually if you are in a low traffic area I would recommend some of the hard wood louver floor registers.
